Journey to National Best
The Journey to National Best in skilled nursing care is North Carolina's deliberate effort to transform our skilled nursing homes into facilities and services of the future. Our aim is to aggressively and strategically plan to meet the demands and expectations of our long-term health care consumers and families. To strengthen and transform NC nursing homes, we are focusing on the issues that contribute to the lives of our residents and the staff who care for them.
The purpose of the Journey to National Best is not to mandate changes, but to strategically plan for the future. Our mission is a collaborative effort between consumers, policy makers, stakeholders and providers. NCHCFA members are leading workgroups to research, develop and articulate our goals in five dimensions or guideposts.

Leadership
North Carolina's skilled nursing facilities need qualified, capable leaders to help recruit top-notch staff and guide them to the highest standard of care and plan for the future. To raise the bar in management practices, the Leadership workgroup introduced the Peer Review Meritorious Performer Program.
Public Trust
To make North Carolina the model for nursing home care, we must build renewed support within our communities. That requires spreading the news of all the positive changes and advancements that nursing care facilities are making for the benefit of residents and their families.
Resources
To ensure quality care, skilled nursing facilities must make the most of available resources -- facilities, staff and community support services -- to create an environment that focuses on the individual and offers residents maximum autonomy and choice.
